(Also, you’ve never played Metroid Prime!? *shakes head and shakes head for a few minutes*)

The Metroid The series is famous for its incredible locations, including places like Norfair, Ataria, and Kraid’s Lair. As the series moves into 3D with Retro Studios’ Prime Minister Metroidit featured some of the franchise’s most iconic locations, which are fan favorites to this day.

With the game celebrating its 20th anniversary, we thought it would be interesting to look at every major slot in Metroid Prime and rank them from worst to best. We have them all here except for a few small locations like the sunken frigate. Remember to vote for your favorite game in the poll at the bottom of the page, and share your favorite memories of the game (and your thoughts on our personal ratings) in the comments. .

But enough said, let’s set up our visor to scan and check every location in the Metroid Prime masterpiece…

9: Magmoor’s Cave

Urgh, Magmoor Caverns… are probably the only areas in Metroid Prime that we really dislike.

It looks absolutely gorgeous, but the serious downside of taking damage whenever you hit lava is a huge wound in the back. There are also no boss encounters to talk about in Magmoor Caverns; instead, we just get a fleet of Magmoor creatures wiggling and shooting a bonfire. Although, it must be said, it was quite funny to explode a stalactite from the ceiling that fell on their heads. Plus, the music is pretty awesome.

8: Temple of Antiquities

The Temple of Artifacts is one of the smaller sites in Metroid Prime, although it is considered one of the most important, if not particularly memorable.

On the surface, it’s a bit of a cross between Tallon Overworld’s natural elements with the architecture found in the Chozo Ruins. Here, Samus confronts the iconic Meta Ridley after collecting all 12 Chozo Artifacts, and it makes for one of the most exciting boss encounters in the entire game.

It’s a pity that the whole area is so small, because we would have loved to have spent more time exploring it. As it stands, it’s disappointingly limited.

7: Glacier One (Phendrana Drifts)

Like the Temple of Artifacts, Glacier One is a place within a place. Reception locationif you want. [Nah, you’re alright, ta. – Ed]

It is found in Phendrana Drifts and acts as a research facility for the Space Pirates. Here you encounter iconic Metroid enemies for the first time, along with some truly brutal Space Pirates.

It’s a great little spot, but it’s fairly low on our list due to its reliance on exploration; it’s basically one big fight after another, with very little breathing space between matches. Not exactly what Metroid is all about!

6: Tallon Underworld

The Tallon Overworld was the first “main” area in Metroid Prime, and as such, it’s naturally one of the best, showcasing the GameCube’s stellar image (at least at the time). It’s essentially a gateway to other locations in the game and serves as a good guide area, introducing Samus to smaller, more docile enemies.

Disappointingly there are no major boss encounters in Tallon Overworld, unless you take into account the Plated Beetle, which, to be honest, is more of a sub-boss. Penalized!

5: Crater of impact

Impact Crater is the final main area in Metroid Prime, and it’s another relatively small area, but it’s home to an amazingly nominal final boss, so it’s a particularly memorable area for with us. There’s a whole bunch of Phazon lying around here, the radioactive substance that plays at the heart of the entire Prime trilogy, and its presence makes for some really beautiful settings.

You’ll also encounter loads of mutant Metroids known as ‘Fission Metroids’ and your skills will be tested well and truly. It’s a strong ending to a great game.

4: Phazon Mine

Phazon Mines shares much of the same visual style as the aforementioned Impact Crater, but of course it’s a much larger area, with three main levels to explore. It’s crammed with Space Pirates throughout, including the Elite Pirates and the Omega Pirates, making this area one of the hardest areas in the game.

However, while you’re here, Samus powers up to a considerable extent, so it makes exploring equally fun and challenging.

3: Chozo Ruins

Chozo Ruins has a bit of a desert theme going on, with lots of scattered sand and a whole bunch of giant beetles. It’s a dense area, filled with secrets to uncover and tunnels to roll through like a shapeshifting ball.

The Chozo Ruins’ standout boss encounter is definitely the fearsome Flaahgra, though Hive Mecha is more frustrating than amusing.

Speaking of fun, here’s a fun fact: The Chozo Ruins, specifically the main square, was the first main area built for the game. It is also the largest, with a total of 63 rooms. We like this one a lot!

2: The space pirate destroyer “Orpheon”

As the opening location of Metroid Prime, the Space Pirate Frigate remains one of the most memorable areas of the entire trilogy.

Controlling Samus after she jumps off her ship is simply fun, not to mention the subtle morphing ball controls. As a location, it cooperates with visual narrative cues, from destroyed doors to the rotting corpses of the Space Pirates.

It’s not too welcoming either, ending on a high note with an epic boss encounter against the Queen of Parasites and a race against the clock to escape as Frigate shatters to pieces. What a great first place.

1: Phendrana Drifts

Without a doubt, Phendrana Drifts is the best slot in Metroid Prime. It’s rare that we consider a snow-themed area our absolute favorite, but that’s great!

Like the open-air Destroyer zone, entering Phendrana Drifts for the first time is simply unforgettable. Music, snow, light; it only beautiful. It’s also home to some excellent creatures and boss encounters, including Sheegoth and Thardus, and some really outstanding shapeshifting shadow puzzles.

Honestly, we could be quite happy living here, if not for the fact that we would probably be dead in a few short minutes. There is always a catch.
