MYTH #1 ‘Using HRT is harmful to health’

In fact, HRT has more health benefits such as a reduced risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, clinical depression, bowel cancer and, in some cases, dementia. For most women, the benefits of taking HRT outweigh any risks.

MYTH #2 ‘The best time to take HRT is when I’m past menopause’

‘Perimenopause’ is the period leading up to menopause when symptoms begin and periods often vary in nature or frequency.

Symptoms of perimenopause include brain fog, cycle changes, hot flashes, mood swings, loss of sex drive, joint and muscle pain, and vaginal and urinary symptoms.

Hormone replacement therapy is most effective when it is started during perimenopause, or at least for 10 years after menopause.

MYTH #3 ‘Does HRT cause breast cancer?’

Most types of body-identical HRT have not been shown to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Any risk is associated with older types of HRT and has not been shown to be statistically significant.

There are many different risk factors for breast cancer that are not related to Hormone Replacement Therapy, including obesity, inactivity, and alcohol consumption.
