FA Cup bonus breakdown: How much do the winners get in 2022?

The FA Cup, in its 141st edition since its inception in 1871, is one of the major tournaments on the English football calendar and the oldest domestic knockout tournament in the world.

The tournament is open to all clubs in the top 10 levels of sport in the UK, with 124 teams taking part in the first round, including all 92 from the top four levels of the professional game. We are now entering the third round of the 2021-22 FA Cup, which kicks off the weekend of Friday, January 7 with Premier League and Championship teams entering the fray.

Given the league’s long tradition, simply lifting the FA Cup is a career achievement for most players. The automatic qualification to next season’s Europa League group stage is an added bonus.

But there are also some substantial bonuses available to tournament winners. Below is a breakdown of the deposit amounts for the clubs in the competition.

FA Cup Bonus in 2022

A Premier League team that makes it to the third round and wins the FA Cup will earn that club a total of $4,625,000. Very beneficial.

The big money comes from just reaching the finals, with teams getting paid first to win their semi-finals and then again whether they win or lose the final. So, a semi-final win guarantees a double payday regardless of the outcome of the title fight.

Receipts at the FA Cup gate and division of revenue from tickets

The Official Rules of the FA Cup 2021-22 explains how ticket sales are divided between clubs. Big payday for matches isn’t just enjoyed by the home team drawn to host.

The Football Association requires both clubs attending a match to split the net ticket sales equally in order to reach the quarter-finals. The only time this 50-50 split changes is when a club outside the Premier League or Football League (Championship, League One, League Two) plays against a club from the top four tiers. In that case, the split is 55-45 in favor of the team outside the top four divisions.

When it comes to the semi-finals and final, usually held at London’s Wembley Stadium, these events are handled differently.

Participating clubs do not share any gate revenue for the FA Cup final, but they do receive a portion from semi-final ticket sales:

  • The first 5.5% of net income from semi-annuals is required by the FA for distribution to affiliated associations;
  • then the four semi-finalists split the remaining 58.5%.
