Facebook offers violence, nude posts to users with low digital literacy
- Facebook studies say algorithms have harmed low-tech users with repetitive annoying content.
- Some users don’t understand how content appears in their feeds or how to control it.
- These users are typically older, people of color, less educated, and of lower socioeconomic status.
Two years ago, Facebook researchers conducted a five-question survey designed to gauge users’ digital literacy skills.
It tested users on how well they understood Facebook’s app interface and terms like “tagging” someone on the social network. Their score is the number of questions they answered correctly. The researchers then compared the users’ scores with the types of content Facebook’s algorithm provided them with over a 30-day period.
