India Today AFWA discovered that an old image from the US had been digitally altered to show the face of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan next to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In the original photo, taken in California in 2008, the truck’s white back door has no photo on it.
A photo that has gone viral on Twitter shows the face of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan printed on the back door of a van alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Deposed but not defeated… Discovered in Moscow a few days ago,” viral tweets read.
The India Today War Against Fake News (AFWA) found this claim to be false. An old image from California in the US has been digitally altered to show Khan’s face next to Putin.
A reverse search of the image on Google led us to several media sites that have used the image for many years. But in these reports, the truck’s white back door is plain white, with no stickers or photos or prints.
Among the top results was a BBC report from June 2021 titled “Valid Car Parts Disappear in 60 Seconds.” Piece on the theft of the catalytic converter from the car attached some representative images. We found the photo going viral among these stock photos along with the caption, “The shift to electric cars will help solve the problem.”
While there are no clues as to the whereabouts of the photograph here, the BBC credited Getty Images for the photo. We did a reverse search for viral images with the keyword “Getty Images”.
Which leads us to the Anglo-American visual media company’s website, where same photo captioned, “California freeway traffic jam.”
This confirms that the image was not shot in Moscow as claimed in a viral tweet.
We can also find pictures on stock photography website iStock has the same caption but also mentions the upload date – April 9, 2008 – proving that the photo is more than a decade old.
This helps us to conclude that the faces of Imran Khan and Vladimir Putin were digitally added to a 2008 photograph from the US and not from Moscow, Russia.
