The first rule for any professional sportsperson is that you must not bet on games. Technically it’s called Rule 21 and you can find it hanging in every Big League clubhouse. Pete Rose will walk through it every day for decades as a player and manager, never mind, so his lifetime ban is the proper punishment. That is the basic rule.

Rose claims he never bet against the Reds, but that doesn’t really matter. If Rose bets on the Reds three days in a row and then not Wednesday, then we know what’s going on. So the same goes for Calvin Ridley. What he’s done, betting on his team’s games, gets people too close to wondering if everything we see on the pitch is up to par. Then again, listen to any caller on the radio talking about sports and then think about how many fans really think everything they see is growing.

Except it’s not like that anymore, right? Not exactly, and certainly not what we remember. Ridley was reported by a gambling site for the NFL. And it feels like it’s the right of the real person being protected here. At least more than the NFL’s.

Because if the NFL is making the integrity of their games a real priority, as my colleague Stephen Knox pointed out Yesterday when reporting this story, why is Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross not being seriously investigated? He was accused by a trusted source, his own damn coach, that he instructed that the coach said his team had to dive for a better draft position. . Does it matter if it is for a draft position or financial return? Doug Pederson was also accused of throwing his last game as Eagles coach for a better draft position, though he said he was “training to win.”

The NFL has always been on the lookout for gambling. It has the most open information policy on injuries especially from gambling. Teams were penalized for injury lists throughout the week. Who is that really for? Their opponents or fantasy footballers trying to set up their squad?

No, this is like DraftKings and PointsBet and all the rest asking their new errand boy, the NFL, to make sure their interests are protected. It’s not that the NFL fears games being tarnished by what each team really expects, we’ve seen that. It’s the game stores that are worried about people being hesitant to gamble on games where they’re not sure everything they should be. That’s why justice/punishment came to Ridley so quickly. Now they are bedmates. Meaning they are actually looking for a player to bet on and are willing to report that to the federation. Beer companies also buy loads of advertising and sponsorships, but Budweiser doesn’t phone league offices when a player shows up on Wednesday.

Especially with the way gambling expands. You can go down this path as far as you like. With individual rounds available to bet on quarters, quarters, and any other combination you can think of. The smaller you can argue, the easier it is to manipulate. Players are not capable of throwing games or even scraping points as we remember from our childhood. The money they make is overwhelming (though not if the MLB owners find their way, which will make everyone’s appetite). But a player here or there to dispute a certain outcome for half or quarter or even possession? Makes you wonder.

If you’re wondering how Ridley was able to get such a quick and radical suspension while Ben Roethlisberger has just been hailed by networks and fans as a head of state, know that it really isn’t. must be the NFL administering the suspension. It’s the new lord of the NFL.
