Family of man killed in police incident files $50m claim | Black Lives Matter News

Los Angeles police repeatedly assaulted the Black Lives Matter co-founder’s cousin in the hours before his death.

Lawyer for the 5-year-old son of the man who died in the US after the Los Angeles police case many times shocked he with a stun gun filed a $50 million claim for damages to the city.

This request is required before Keenan Anderson’s son can sue the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for civil rights violations after officers assaulted his father six times in less than a minute to subdue him on January 3.

Carl Douglas, the family’s attorney, said at a press conference announcing the case: “He’s a budding flower, but the LAPD is unfortunately a hammer. “They treat that flower as if it were a nail.”

The request was filed Friday on behalf of Anderson’s son, Syncere Kai Anderson, who stood with his mother, Gabrielle Hansell, along with their attorney.

Anderson – a 31-year-old high school English teacher in Washington, DC, and cousin of Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black lives are worth it too in motion – was a suspect in a hit-and-run traffic collision in Venice, California, on the west coast of the United States. Police said he fled from officers and resisted arrest.

Anderson shouted for help after he was pinned down the street by officers, according to a video released by the LAPD.

“They’re trying to kill me,” Anderson shouted.

Footage shows an officer pressing his forearm into Anderson’s chest and elbowing his neck.

“They’re trying to get me George Floyd,” Anderson said, referring to the Black man killed by officers in Minnesota.

Sheriff Michel Moore said Anderson initially complied with officers as they investigated whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. But he succumbed after running into the middle of the street and resisting arrest.

The sheriff said an LAPD toxicology test found cocaine and marijuana in Anderson’s body, though those results differed from those independently reported by the coroner.

The officers involved have yet to be named but their union has released a statement saying their families and lawyers are “embarrassingly attempting to profit” from a “tragic incident”. .

After succumbing, Anderson went into cardiac arrest and died at the hospital about 4 hours later.
