Family recognized for finding largest tree in Carmel – WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana weather

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Carmel City has found the biggest tree in the city, and it’s the Sycamore tree!

Residents were invited to submit their largest trees in a month-long contest, centered around this year’s Arbor Day. The competition is organized by the Carmel Urban Forestry Association.

The city examined the entries and gathered measurements to determine the largest tree in Carmel. The Wong family is the winner. This family submitted their large tree that measures 271.8 inches in circumference. It is almost 60 inches larger than the running tree at Canary Court.

Carmel has been recognized as an American Tree City for 27 years and a winner of the Tree City Development Award for over 20 years for increasing the number of trees in the community. The city added 600 trees last year.

“I wanted to create a way to make our residents more aware of our mature urban forest. This contest helped them see how many great old trees exist in our community and reminded them of this valuable asset,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.

The city’s Urban Forestry Commission celebrated Arbor Day with a Big Tree Competition. There are a total of 142 entries in 10 species categories. The largest tree was determined from the finalists. The winner was announced the first weekend of the Carmel Farmers Market in May.

Carmel’s urban forest expert and environmentalist, Daren Mindham, said the competition has increased people’s interest in the urban forest and large trees in Carmel. They plan to continue the competition in the future.
