‘Father & Soldier’ with Omar Sy to unlock certain categories – The Hollywood Reporter
Father & Soldiera World War I television series starring Frenchman Omar Sy (Lupine), will open the competition for this year’s Certain category at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
The historical drama directed by Mathieu Vadepied for the first time follows the forgotten heroes of World War I: Senegalese infantry soldiers forced to leave their homeland and fight to liberate France. Sy plays Bakary Diallo, a father who enlists in the French army in 1917 to join his 17-year-old son Thierno, who is arrested against his will.

The French-Senegal co-production between Unité and Korokoro will open in Cannes’ Uncertainty category on May 18. Father & Soldier will be released theatrically in France by Gaumont, which is also in charge of international sales.
The Unconsidered section, considered the main sidebar of Cannes, runs until May 27. Among the highlights of this year’s competition are Agnieszka Smocynska. Silent Twins starring Letitia Wright and Jodhi May, and BeastActress Riley Koeugh’s feature film debut, co-directed with Gina Gammell.
