Fiber Optic Lines The Origin of North Texas Homeowners Plumbing Problems – CBS Dallas/Fort Worth

HEATH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Heath’s Michael Mahan says it suddenly became apparent on Christmas Eve that there was a problem with his pipes.

“Everything that’s supporting the shower is under an inch of water, nothing is bouncing up, nothing is going down,” he said.

The plumber started to work, suspecting a tree root might be blocking the line.

“What we found,” he said, searching for the right words. “I don’t think they can do it if they try.”

Two fiber optic lines, one from AT&T, the other from Suddenlink, cut through his sewage line.

“I can not believe it. Both hit the dead center of gravity in the middle of it,” Mahan said.

He remembers AT&T starting a line two and a half years ago and then, Suddenlink some time later.

Back then, he was single, and even with a partially clogged pipe it seemed he took care of the business.

Today, he is married to a wife, his son and mother live with him.

“We put a lot of pressure on the system and that’s when we noticed the problem,” Mahan said.

Since Christmas, he has been trying to solve the problem.

“Who do you blame? Like we don’t care. he said.

Mahan said that no plumber wants to risk cutting AT&T or Suddenlink’s lines, and as of Thursday, neither company showed up.

So CBS 11 reached out to both.

The next morning, an AT&T team was at his door.

In the afternoon, a contractor of Suddenlink also arrived.

“When they showed up this morning, I was so happy, like, ‘Thank you!’” Mahan said.

In a statement to CBS 11, AT&T wrote:

“As we work to expand and enhance our fiber network to deliver extreme speeds to our communities, our goal is to minimize the impact on residents as much as possible. We guide our contractors through all the necessary procedures to have the utilities in place before they begin work. We are working with our contractor to repair and restore any impact from our work.”

By sunset, the company’s employees had finished repairing the damage.

And Mahan, after a delay, finally gets the Christmas present he’s been after.

“All I want for Christmas is my toilet flush,” he said, laughing.
