Field trip to Disney Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ canceled after parents upset over same-sex kiss

COLLIER . COUNTY

Kissing in children’s movies is controversial.

One parent claims to have forced their child’s summer camp to cancel their actual movie trip.

It all revolves around the new Disney Pixar movie “Lightyear” which includes a short scene of two female cartoon characters kissing.

Frustrated Thomas Felke emailed WINK News to complain that Collier County Parks and Recreation had suddenly canceled a field trip to see the show. He said he considers it a form of discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

“Film and art are depictions of real life. That’s what we’ve got here. That is what we have had the opportunity to show our children. And we took it away from them,” said Felke.

Felke is the father of a 5 and 11 year old.

Felke said a camp counselor told his family the movie trip was canceled after some parents complained.

He believes parents are sending the wrong message to all the kids.

“Imagine the message to children who identify as part of the LGBTQIA community or, you know, who have same-sex families. And that’s what got me really nervous about it,” said Felke.

Collier County told WINK News in a statement, that because of staffing issues, Parks and Rec were unable to provide parents with options for whether their children go to the movies or skip. So they canceled instead.

“This is not graphic, nothing violent. This is just a realistic depiction of people in love,” said Felke.
