European knockout round (3 places for the World Cup)

There are 12 European countries that still have hope of participating in the World Cup after failing to earn a direct spot when finishing first in the qualifying group.

The 10 runners-up from each qualifying group were joined by the two group winners in the UEFA Nations League – the inclusion of which later enhanced the competition of the UEFA Nations League – and a draw split them into three draws different, or ‘paths’ as FIFA like to call them (see below). Each is basically a “final four”.

Each group will have two knockout semi-finals (March 24-25) and then a knockout final (March 28-29). The top six seeds with the highest total points in the group stage qualifiers (minus points before the teams ranked last for those countries participate in six-team qualifying groups) will host the semi-finals.
