Filmmakers Discussing the Top 10 ‘Muslims’ of 2021 (Video) – The Hollywood Reporter

Director of the top 10 documentaries of the year – Become Cousteau, First wave, Escape, Establish, Francesco, Julia, Progress, Rescue, Summer of the soul and The Velvet Underground – gathered at the Savannah Film Festival earlier this season to record the Document for the Eighth Annual Table View, as always, presented by The Hollywood Reporter and moderated by you for real.

Now, with voting underway to determine the best documentary Oscar, CHEAP Happy to share the full conversation with these talented filmmakers about the inspiration, creation challenges, and impact of their documentary:

  • On behalf of Netflix Establish, chronicling the journey of three girls from America, where they grew up, to China, where they were born and adopted due to the one-child policy, Amanda Lipitz
  • On behalf of Neon and Participants Escape, a story about how an Afghan refugee perseveres through trauma and tragedy on his way to a better life, Jonas Poher Rasmussen
  • On behalf of Searchlight’s Summer of the soul, a presentation of long-buried footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival with a background on why this “Black Forest” is so important, Amir “Questlove” Thompson
  • And on behalf of NatGeo’s Rescue, looking back at the considerable effort that was made to save a group of boys from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018, which she co-directed Jimmy Chin, Oscar winner for 2019 Free Solos, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi

In the previous seven years of this panel, the Documentary Panel to Watch hosted the filmmakers of 14 of the last 35 best documentaries to be nominated for an Oscar – Find Vivian Maier in 2014; Amy, Land of Cartel, What happened, Miss Simone? and Flaming Winter: Ukraine’s War for Freedom in 2015; OJ: Made in America and Life, Animation in 2016; Icarus and Strong Island in 2017; Free Solos and RBG in 2018; American factory and The cave in 2019; and Camp Crip and Time in 2020 – five of which have won Oscars in their respective years: Amy, OJ: Made in America, Icarus, Free Solos and American factory.
