Find out about the big Grrrls cast! Plus-size dancers compete for a spot on the stage

It really feels like just yesterday Lizzo teamed up with Prime Video and sent out an appeal to find oversized dancers to join her Big Grrrls dance group. She’s always looking for oversized dancers to join her famous dance team, but the agencies never have them… so she has to figure things out and find them herself. In an ideal (not obese) world, society won’t judge you by your size, but unfortunately that’s the reality for most fat people in fact every area is constantly belittled and underestimated.

I recently had the opportunity to chat with the cast of Watch Out For The Big Grrrls at SXSW so you can get to know ten talented women trying to snag a spot. By Lizzo the iconic dance group before the show officially premieres on March 25th!

How does it feel to know she’s intentionally looking for confident big butt girls to perform on stage?

Jayla: “Seeing someone like Lizzo looking for someone like me gave me hope because there is nothing in the industry for women like us who are larger-than-life women. And you know, it’s a very harsh environment to work. And the fact that she’s looking for it gave us some hope. That we will be seen and shown that we are strong and valid, and that we deserve to be on stage. “

Sydney: “I also agree with Jayla. Like I said, there’s a lot of industries that are like dancing on ice and that allows for inclusion when it comes to brands or with models and things like that, but personally I feel that dance is the last one to really do. underrepresentation of curvy women, larger or larger body.

It really gives me hope also because of my story. I’ve danced all my life. I cheered in high school, I danced in college, and I said to myself, there’s nothing else for me after college, I’m just going to quit dancing and go model or make an impact and become a global artist. that’s all, so see Lizzo come out with this revolutionary concept that’s both beautiful and gives myself and so many other girls hope. ”

Jasmine: “So I am a mother. I have two girls, one five years old and one three years old, and I live with their father when I apply for this. And you’ll see on the show what happens because I definitely talk about my story. But when I first discovered this… dancing saved my life again.

And I don’t want to talk about it [right now] because I just want you to have that moment when you watch me talk about it on the show. But it was a dream come true. Because I always feel like I’m that Bastard 100%. But people don’t think it’s me, but that doesn’t matter to me because I know that I’m that Bastard. You know what I’m saying?!

There’s not a lot of space for me to walk in. I’ve been to dance troupes and it’s been a great experience, but I’ve never had the opportunity to dance on stage and tour with anyone like my friends, go to festivals, get Call and become the standout dancer. So this opportunity saved my life. ”

What was it like, living in the Big Grrrl House together during the competition? Can you share a favorite memory or two?

Arianna: “My favorite memory in the house is when we threw a birthday party for my roommate Asia. We did a bunch of behind-the-scenes shots of it, but we set up a slightly sleepy party situation. We had Asian favorites, and after a long day of practice, we still took time to congratulate our friend.”

Ashley: “My favorite memory is… you know, at night they told us the cameras were cut in the middle of the night, sooo… that’s when we could really let our guards down, really just talk about yourself and get naked!”

*everyone laughs*

These women are all incredible, and they are all the stars of my book (and the women in my head)! I can’t wait to see the show when it premieres on Prime Video this Friday!

Get ready to clear your schedule, because it’s the big GrRrls Day on March 25th! How are you celebrating?!
