Fire damages Augustana student housing | Local News
An Augustana University-owned home for students was severely damaged by a fire Wednesday, Rock Island Sheriff Greg Marty said.
The fire was reported shortly before 3 p.m. at 730 34th St.
Marty said crews arrived on the scene to find a large fire on the second floor of the mansion. The fire has spread to a completed third floor, he added.
The house was used to house eight Augustana students, Marty said. No one was in the residence at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
The house is one of the older houses in the area that has been converted into student housing.
Electronic records from the Rock Island County Assessor’s Office do not indicate when the home was built or when Augustana College purchased the home.
The building was deemed uninhabitable and all students were relocated for the remainder of the semester, Marty said.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated late Wednesday.
