Fire ship HMCS Fredericton off the coast of Norway, no injuries reported

OTTAWA – The Canadian military said a fire broke out aboard one of its warships early this morning while it was acting as the flagship of the NATO fleet.

No injuries were reported on board the HMCS Fredericton, which is currently en route to a Norwegian port for repairs after the fire was extinguished.

The military has not yet determined the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage, or whether the ship is currently sailing according to its strength.

However, a Norwegian newspaper was reporting that the Halifax-class frigate was participating in a NATO exercise in inclement weather when the fire broke out and the ship lost power.

Fredericton left her home port of Halifax in July for a six-month deployment, during which she served as flagship of the Permanent NATO Maritime Group 1, which Canada currently commands.

The Royal Canadian Navy launched an investigation in November 2018 following a series of fires and power outages on several frigates over a period of several weeks.

This Canadian Press report was first published on November 18, 2021.
