Fisker plans to share EV platform, sell emissions credits

Fisker plans to share its EV platform with other automakers, as well as explore selling emissions credits, the company revealed this week in its third-quarter financial results update.

“Fisker has begun preliminary discussions with major global OEMs and enterprises to explore sharing both Ocean and Pear platforms, joint US manufacturing and future emissions credit sales. “, read the final point in the press release summarizing Fisker’s Q3 results.

Full-line automakers — especially those that still make many big, hungry trucks — buy emissions credits to make up the shortfall in average fleet fuel economy. Electric vehicle-specific manufacturers end up running a credit surplus by only producing vehicles that don’t have zero “exhaust” emissions and are therefore able to sell the credits to the automakers. I want to avoid being fined.

Tesla has shown that selling these credits can be a lucrative business for now. Tesla’s biggest customer, Stellantis’ predecessor FCA, announced last year that There will be no need for Tesla emissions credits in that brand’s transition to plug-in hybrids and EVs.

While it would make sense for Fisker to follow Tesla’s lead and sell emissions credits, licensing platforms for the Ocean SUV and Pear are unlikely. Ocean expects to start shipping to customers in 2023, followed by Pear.

Fisker has been following a “property light” model from the start, which means they haven’t developed their platforms entirely in-house. So it’s a test of the value that Fisker holds in these cars to shop them around.

The Ocean was built with substantial contributions from Magna, and will be built at that company’s Austrian plant. In the release, Fisker cited what appeared to be an updated production target of 42,400 Oceans for 2023 — the first year of planned production. According to the company, the estimated number is more than 300 samples in Q1, more than 8,000 samples in Q2, more than 15,000 samples in Q3 and the rest in Q4.

Fisker also says it has reached more than 62,000 reservations for the Ocean as of October 31, 2022. The company also claims a “double-digit increase in high-end trim configurations in recent months”, though that may be because Fisker has closed pre-orders at lower prices – the Sport and Ultra entry-level models. The Fisker Ocean One Launch Edition sold out earlier this year.

In August, Fisker pushed to consolidate Ocean’s initial sales ahead of the Inflation Reduction Act and a drastic cut in numbers. Eligible EVs.

Pear is scheduled to begin production in 2024 at the Foxconn plant in Lordstown, Ohio formerly owned by General Motors. Fisker has yet to reveal how dependent the car is on Foxconn’s EV platform. Fisker is targeting Base price $29,900and start taking bookings to Pear before revealing any key details about the model. Fisker now says a driveable prototype will be ready by the end of this month.
