Forced labor clothes from China blocked in Quebec

TORONTO – The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) says it blocked a shipment from China on the grounds that the products were manufactured using forced labor.

The CBSA confirmed in an emailed statement to CTVNews.ca that it had intercepted a shipment of women’s and children’s clothing originating in China from being received in Quebec.

The agency declined to share any details about the importer, citing confidentiality rules in the The laws of import and export.

This is the first admission of an interception of its kind since the federal government’s amendment Tariffs officially prohibits the importation of all or part of goods made with forced labor.

The new laws went into effect in July 2020, as part of the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement, amid widespread reports from human rights advocates that China has detained Uighurs and Other Turkic minority groups forced labor in Xinjiang province.

The CBSA said it will continue to work with Canada’s Employment and Social Development Program to investigate complaints and allegations related to imported goods using forced labor.

A spokesperson for the agency said: “Unlike most other non-permitted goods, there are no visual instructions for border services personnel to confirm the labor standards for the production of a product. specific item”.

“Research and coordination among all stakeholders is required to establish reliable and actionable sources of information to implement the ban.”
