Ford announces repairs for 2021 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator fires

In mid-May, Ford announce a About 39,000 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators recalled from the 2021 model year due to fires that started under the hoods of the SUVs. At the time, Ford had received 16 incident reports, 14 of which were with rental vehicles. The automaker warned owners to park outside and away from construction sites while engineers figure out what’s going on and how to fix the problem. Since that May announcement, five other fires have been reported, four of which were rental cars, and one person with burn injuries. The The company has announced that they understand the problem and take remedial action, while expanding the range of potentially affected vehicles. Instead of remember 39,013 vehicles manufactured between December 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021, the recall currently covers 66,221 vehicles assembled between July 27, 2020 and August 31, 2021.

The suspected culprit is a circuit board supplied by a supplier that changed production locations during the pandemic. Ford’s press release on the matter states that “circuit boards manufactured at this facility are particularly susceptible to short circuits.”

Affected vehicles are equipped with 800 watt or 700 watt cooling fan systems. Approximately one-third of the recalled population is equipped with second-hand equipment and will be quickly repaired at seller. On these SUVs, technicians will check the battery junction box. If they find evidence of melting, they will replace the entire box. If not, they will simply remove the ground wire of the motor fan running to the battery junction box; Since this ground relay is redundant, changing does not change fan operation.

Owners with 700-watt systems may have to wait until September for repairs. These vehicles require an auxiliary junction box with a jumper wire, but these parts are not currently available.

Ford will notify all owners through the FordPass app and will contact owners of the 700-watt cooling system once the parts are in stock. Until their vehicles are repaired, Ford says SUVs are safe to drive, but they should still be parked outside and away from structures. The message is somewhat mixed – ‘Yes, your cars are safe to drive, but they can catch fire, so don’t park near anything flammable’ – encourages one owner group files lawsuit against Ford.

Vehicle owners with questions can contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 and refer to recall number 22S36. Or they can contact National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 800-424-9153) and quote campaign number 22V346000.
