Ford F-150 Lightning EV ready for police duty


The highly advertised Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck is ready for police duty in the US

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle (SSV) was the first EV pickup truck built for the police force.

Based on input level F-150 Lightning ProThe F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is designed for “partial expertise needs” outside of pursuit situations, including assisting at an accident or crime scene and towing a boat or trailer.

The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV has a number of features taken directly from the internal combustion engine-powered F-150 Police Responder.

These include high-grade heavy duty police cloth seats with smaller pads to allow easier entry and exit of the vehicle, integrated steel shields on the backs of the front seats, a center console that “comfort-friendly” reinforcements, plastic rear seats and vinyl floors, as well as red/blue or amber/white roof-mounted LED warning lights available.

The Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV shares the electric powertrain and battery with many of its existing customers, and they didn’t receive any performance upgrades.

The standard battery version provided by a dual electric motor setup manufacturing 337kW power and 1050Nm torque, coupled with a 98kWh battery. It also has a 3492kg (7700lb) pulling power and one 1013kg (2235lb) payload.

The extended range battery version on the other hand also provided by a dual electric motor setup but produce 432kW and 1050Nmand is paired with a 131kWh battery. It also has the ability to drag 4536kg (10,000lb).

Ford claims this extended battery version has a 0-60mp/h sprint time of under four seconds.

One thing Ford has yet to detail is the claimed range figures, but the firm says that more information will come later this year.

Features that go from the regular F-150 Lightning to the police version include a lockable 400L motor and 220 amp DC-DC power supply, as well as a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system 12 inch touch screen layout.

If you’ve never lived under a rock, you know that the F-150 Lightning has proven to be quite popular.

With a total of 200,000 F-150 Lightning orders already in place, Ford is aiming to increase its annual production rate to 150,000 by 2023.

In other words, this means that the Ford F-150 Lightning will be sold out at least until 2023.

Real Ford Reservations closed for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning back in December 2021 due to this unprecedented high demand. Orders have not reopened yet.

Blue Oval has now invested more than $1 billion (A1.42 billion) in Michigan for the F-150 Lightning alone, with 1700 jobs created among Ford’s five plants.

It is not clear if the F-150 Lightning will launch, but Ford Australia has previously said it will bring at least five electric vehicles by 2024. It also brings Gasoline-powered F-150 to hit the market in 2023.

Given North America’s massive demand for the F-150 Lightning, don’t expect it to be here anytime soon.
