Ford was one of the first manufacturers to apply carbon wheel technology on its sports cars to help reduce weight and prevent mass. The company now wants to explore extending that technology to other vehicle types to take advantage of the increased efficiency.
Talking to CarExpert recently Ford Ranger Raptor prototype event, Ford Vehicle Program Manager for Icons and Ford Performance, Ali Jammoul, said Ford is investigating how this technology could benefit the driving experience for customers. Ford SUVs and pickup trucks.
“You can actually transfer that technology to trucks… Definitely pickup trucks, SUVs. And I think we need to experiment with [it]I really like that technology,” Jammoul said.
“It’s about saving weight. No looks great. And customers love it. They are willing to pay. And you know, every time I look at those carbon fiber wheels, even though the volume is low, it makes a lot of sense… So I’m excited about it. And I think it’s going to be great. ”
Ford, along with several other manufacturers, is now supplying carbon wheels from Australian manufacturer Carbon Revolution.
With manufacturers pursuing every last possible way to save weight without sacrificing performance, carbon wheels are expected to become more common on electric vehicles as every gram of weight saved. is broader in scope.
Luxury brand Bentley recently launched a carbon wheel option for Bentayga The SUV, manufactured by Bucci Composites, saves 24kg compared to the vehicle’s unladen weight.
