Ford Transit Trail 2023 revealed to enthusiasts “van life”

Understanding that ‘van-life’ and custom fitters are immediately modifying trucks to their specifications, Ford has released a new Transit variant that will give customers “a vehicle Loaded ready to be fitted straight from the factory.”

The 2023 Ford Transit TrailCurrently available only to US customers, is a more custom, off-road ready Transit designed to take the fight to four-wheel drive versions of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Off-road capability is enhanced with the addition of four-wheel drive with five riding modes, along with an increased ride height of 3.5 inches (89mm) and 30.5-inch Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse off-road tires on the top. 16 inch black alloy wheels.

The Transit Trail will be available in both medium and high roof configurations, along with an extended length high top model.

The largest offers 13,790L of customizable cargo space and has room for those up to 6ft 5in (195cm) tall.

Ford knows exactly who the market for this model is – ‘van’ are the first words shown in the promotional video.

Standard equipment includes privacy goggles, built-in roof vents and four-way swiveling seats for the driver and passenger.

Equipping is recommended with drillable areas for cabinets, shelving and bed areas.

At the front of the cabin, there’s a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This is also being rolled out on local transit coverage for 2023.

Exterior upgrades include prominent black plastic cladding, a black grille with integrated marker lights, HID headlights and a sliding front bumper.

While the base engine in the American-made van is a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, the Trail comes standard with the Transit’s option. EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 turbocharged petrol engine. This creates 231kW power and 542Nm torque, and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The towing capacity is 2950kg.

The Transit Trail will be assembled in Missouri and will be open to order by the end of 2022, with prices starting at $65,975 ($104,045) — in context, the Transit range in the US is priced at $50,130 ($79,060).

Ted Cannis, Ford Pro CEO, said: “Our decades of experience in the auto industry and insights from the new van community have helped us design a vehicle makes it easier for adventurers to begin their next journey.

A Trail-branded Transit has been available in the UK since 2020, when it and the Transit Custom Trail were launched.

It’s another monster, sporting a sturdy grille, inspired by the Raptor but without many of the features of the American model, and offered with front- or all-wheel drive. It has never made the trip to Australia.

Since our Public Transport originates from Turkey and not the US, the New Trail is unlikely to get here.

However, Ford Australia has demonstrated its commitment to expanding its Transit range locally by announcing electric e-Transit.

It will arrive in Australia from January 2023, joining the existing line of diesel engines.
