A former French football star has died after nearly 40 years in a coma due to a surgical complication.
Jean-Pierre Adams underwent routine knee surgery in March 1982, but never regained consciousness and lived for decades afterward at his home in Nimes, France, according to the Associated Press.
Adams is 73 years old. His death was announced by his former teams Paris Saint-Germain and Nimes.
“This morning we learned of the death of Jean-Pierre Adams,” Nimes Olympique wrote on Twitter. “He played for Nimes 84 times and, together with Marius Tresor, he became the ‘Black Protector’ in the French national team. The club sends its sincerest condolences to his loved ones and family.”

Adams injured his knee at training camp and had to go to Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon for surgery, according to BBC News. But many of the hospital’s workers went on strike, and a series of errors – including the placement of a tube that blocked Adams’ airways instead of ventilation them – caused him to go into cardiac arrest.
Paris Saint-Germain said in a statement on Monday: “His joy, his charisma and respect for his experience.
Adams played 22 matches for France.
