Frank Gore and Deron Williams each had successful sports careers up to this point. Next, the two will meet in the head-to-head boxing ring in a match between the former NFL Pro Bowl running opposite the former NBA All-Star guard.
In 16 years in the NFL, Gore was a dominant player, dashing for 16,000 yards, the third most in NFL history, with 3,735 shots with 81 dashing touches. In a position with such a relatively short shelf life, Gore has proved an iron man as his 16 seasons have been tied with the most ever by a run back.
Williams appeared in 845 games – starting 771 – and averaged 16.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 8.1 assists. As the overall #3 pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, Williams had three All-Star teams and ranked as one of the NBA’s most points defended during his prime.
After stellar careers in their respective sports, both turned to focus on boxing. Gore turned down the opportunity to return to the NFL to improve his boxing skills. He’s part owner of an MMA gym in Dallas, and has been training in-season boxing for years.
Williams is also the owner of an MMA gym and has practiced martial arts for many years. He was a wrestler in high school, but focused on boxing towards the end of the year in preparation for the bout.
The clash of Gore vs. Williams took place as part of a fighting game featured by YouTuber Jake Paul and MMA fighter Tyron Woodley. The pair got together earlier this year, with Paul winning a split decision.
