Frank Ocean Fit was ahead of its time

In January 2019, Frank Ocean was doing what people with a good relationship with fashion usually do: attend shows at Paris Fashion Week. But clothes, in particular, has resonated with menswear enthusiasts on the Internet. It was a vibrant shaded puffer jacket worn with blue jeans and hiking shoes, outfitted with a beanie and a large leather bag. Nearly 4 years later, this look is still online — and notably feels as stylish today, a testament to both Ocean’s ability to stay ahead of the curve and how he quietly helps. reshape big men’s clothes according to their own taste.

Today, this casual outdoor look is more or less impossible to miss in the stylish corners of basically any city on earth: you see Salomon sneakers paired with Comme des Garçons pants, or shoes Stone Island puffs with classic Levi’s pants are sought after. Walk through New York’s SoHo neighborhood, and you’ll see men dressed in a mix of tried-and-true outdoor brands with high-fashion labels. Ocean isn’t the first to do this, but when he does something, it’s always seen as ingenious — and people drop what they’re doing for attention. Accordingly, this style has replaced the usual craze of last year; the goal is not to dress like Jerry Seinfeld anymore but like George Costanza. (Another notable puffy jacket icon, though.) It’s also, unsurprisingly, huge on Instagram and TikTok. Call it Instagram Explore-core.

Ocean’s standout feature is his massive, dark blue leather tote bag. It’s Celine — and not just any Celine CelineSince the brand still has its mark and is passionately adored by fans Phoebe Philo. (A very IYKYK jacket, even back in 2019.) Ocean’s bright coat, while it’s from Mammut, a Swiss company for participating adventurers, and the hat His wool is Arc’teryx, an outdoor company serious about brand technology that is today a discount brand among fashion houses. The outfit is completed with blue jeans and navy hiking boots. Now, why is this weird outfit guaranteed to be covered from GQ and Vogue and just about every other fashion headline on the internet?

For starters, the outfit definitely stands out among the usual fashion week fare.

A photo of the day Ocean was found next sitting for Timothée Chalamet, who wears a more typical black garment. It made the family eccentric — at least a few years ago — wearing a tank top and jeans to sit in the front row at a Louis Vuitton show. The fit also feels bigger than the sum of its parts; each article plays perfectly into the next, enhancing the look from start to finish. The look is also enhanced by Ocean’s MFA-grade eye for color theory, pairing similar and complementary colors without too much overlap. (This simple yet cool brown and blue color matches still pops up in my head.)

Looking back, this outfit feels like the beginning of a big change — a freak drop of water that blew up a well like solid technical ceramics went from the more obscure corners of menswear to the mainstream. Now, as fall turns into winter and heavier coats spin, it’s all but guaranteed that we’ll see plenty of stylishly dressed guys like Frank Ocean, whether they want to or not.
