FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) – Two Franklin officers were injured after being dragged behind a car when the suspect pulled over from the scene Sunday morning.
Officer Dustyn Stevens stopped 26-year-old Roy Nicholson of Columbia while traveling north of Interstate 65 between Murfreesboro Road and McEwen Road at 10:20 a.m.
Police said when Stevens, a Franklin Policeman of four years, asked Nicholson to get out of his car, he noticed a gun in the car and smelled of marijuana. Outside the vehicle, police said Nicholson began actively fighting Stevens.
Police released a dashcam video showing “Nicholson escaping the police” before getting back into the vehicle. Video then shows the vehicle driving with Stevens and an Assistant Officer, Matt Lamarr, being dragged behind. Lamarr, a 16-year Franklin Police veteran, ran to Stevens’ aid.
Witnesses to the incident ran after cars. With his statement, investigators immediately located Nicholson outside the Franklin Walmart. Police charged Nicholson with two more serious counts of first responder assault and felony evasion. Police are expected to charge Nicholson with more counts.
EMS took Stevens to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where police said he was treated and released. Lamar’s injuries did not require immediate medical treatment.
Nicholson was released on parole with an amount of $40,000 set by the Judge. He will appear in court on June 9 at 1 p.m
