Galveston County deputy sheriff sustains multiple injuries after being stabbed on Highway 87 during Go Topless Jeep Weekend


GALVESTON COUNY, Texas (KTRK) – A co-pilot sustained multiple injuries Sunday after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 87 during a weekend Jeep ride, according to Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset.

At about 1:30 a.m., the co-pilot was working on the highway in the Holiday Beach subdivision of Crystal Beach when a private vehicle struck the co-pilot, Trochesset said.

The co-pilot was taken to UTMB with two broken legs, a broken arm and a head injury, according to officials. The co-pilot underwent surgery on Sunday morning but their condition remains unknown.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the co-pilot has been identified as Darius Gilbert.

Gilbert was arrested by DPS officers for assaulting a peace officer. He’s in jail with a fine of $100,000.

No other injuries were reported in the incident, but authorities said many participants of the event on the Bolivar peninsula were taken to hospital.

Large crowds stretched emergency services.

Up to 40,000 people attended Saturday’s event in Crystal Beach.

Galveston County Emergency Services said eight patients were taken out and 30 were taken to hospital by road.

Most are minor emergencies, but they are considered two major injuries.
