Gamora lives in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 thanks to Avengers logic

As the great scholars have asked, “Where is Gamora?” “Who is Gamora?” And “Why Gamora?” And with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soaring toward the cinema, and episode 2 six years ago when you looked in the rearview mirror, you were probably wondering: “How did Gamora live in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? She didn’t die in Avengers: Infinity War?”

Yes she did. And then something else happened, and now she’s back. Arrange. It’s very complicated. Let’s make new.

[Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Marvel Cinematic Universe movies up through Thor: Love and Thunder, but not for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.]

Who is Gamora (in the MCU)?

If you’re a die-hard Marvel fan, some of this is foundational, but let’s go over some of the basics of Gamora (Ga-lore-a) lore.

Introduced in 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy, and played by Zoe Saldaña, Gamora is an assassin nicknamed “the most dangerous woman in the galaxy.” When Gamora was a child, intergalactic warlord Thanos conquered her planet, killed 50% of the population, adopted her as his biological daughter, and sent her into a life of murder in space. But in Guardians of the Galaxy, she is on the run from her adoptive father, after defecting from his forces. She cooperated with the guardians to prevent Kree general Ronan the Accuser from getting it Power Stoneand over time, she also encouraged her sister Nebula to defect from Thanos.

Where is Gamora (in the main MCU timeline)?

Technically, Gamora is dead. In the events of Avengers: Infinity WarThanos kidnapped her and brought her to the planet Vormir, home of the unknown Soul Stonesomething that requires the sacrifice of a loved one to obtain it — and clearly, the possessive affection of an abusive father who is willing to explicitly kill his own daughter for power is seen as love.

He threw Gamora to her death, and even the Infinity Stones couldn’t reverse the Soul Stone’s sacrifice, so she didn’t come back to life with the rest of the dead. Killed by Thanos’ snap.

Why Gamora (resurrected)?

The real-world answer is that Zoe Saldaña is signed on to play Gamora; she is the main character of the Guardians of the Galaxy sub-series; and passing up the opportunity to have Saldaña play the role of Gamora meant forsaking star power, money, and negotiating power.

The answer in the universe involves the unintuitive way in it Avengers: Game over established the rules of time travel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How is Gamora (alive in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3)?

As one of the interlocking installments of the Avengers’ attempt to fully collect the Infinity Stones from the past, Nebula and War Machine traveled back in time to intercept the Power Stone before the Guardian, Kree or Thanos get it.

Now, logically, the way all of this Gamora works is more like visiting an alternate universe than traveling back in time — as Bruce Banner explains in Endgame, it’s not like the Back to the Future rule. When the Avengers went back in time to retrieve the Power Stone and were discovered by a past version of Thanos, the time bandit created an alternate universe where, years before it happened, Thanos received It turns out that there is a timeline where he collects all these stones. Infinity Stones and killed half of the universe, prompting the Avengers to time travel to collect the Infinity Stones in an attempt to make their own snap in their own present.

So, after abducting the main Timeline Nebula, the alternate universe’s alternate Thanos stole the Avengers’ time travel technology and followed them back to their own “present” (i.e. the universe). their own) to steal the Infinity Stones. His plan – given the evidence that the capture of half-life has inspired so much resistance – is to perform an even worse snap, destroying all life within universe so he can recreate it as he sees fit. And he brings his still-loyal assassin daughters, Alternate Gamora and Alternate Nebula, with him.

During the Avengers’ final battle against the Chitauri army of the alternate Thanos (never forget, taking place in Hudson Valley, upstate New York), the Main Timeline Nebula killed its alternate self. and convince Gamora Substitute to fight for the good guys. After all, the alternate Gamora was pretty close to defecting from the alternate Thanos on his own, just as the main Gamora had been at the same time in his life.

And so, at the end Infinity WarWhen Iron Man sacrifices himself to destroy the entire force of “Thanos” Alternate Gamora remains in the main MCU timeline. The hard part for her Guardians of the Galaxy friends is that this Gamora has never met them, has never shared their adventures, and has never fallen in love with Star-Lord. She refuses to join the group and goes her own way in the galaxy. And as we have seen from their introductory appearance in Thor: Love & Thunderit left a hole in the group, and certainly a hole in Peter’s heart.

Although we can’t say what that means for the alternate Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we know she’s in there. And it’s hard to imagine a universe, alternative or otherwise, in which the way she feels about a bunch of weirdos she’s never met, who insist they miss her so much. must be an important part of the movie.
