ADVICE – Ford Motor has always treated the Mustang as a league of its own. That could soon prove true, with the seventh generation of the famous American carriage.

The Detroit automaker on Wednesday announced a redesigned 2024 hardtop and convertible Mustang with two gas-powered engines. Meanwhile, the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro – the car’s biggest rivals – are expected to go all-electric in the coming years.

Ford officials say redesigning the iconic vehicle without any kind of electrification is part of a “Mustang family” strategy that includes an all-electric lineup of vehicles. Mustang Mach-E crossover went on sale at the end of 2020.

“We know customers want the internal combustion engine and some of them want electric, and we offer both of those Mustangs,” said Jim Owens, Mustang marketing manager.

A planned hybrid variant was scrapped, according to a report According to Automotive News, the Mustang is likely to become the last gas-powered muscle car for Detroit automakers – narrowing the segment seemed so far-fetched a few years ago.

Dodge this summer announced the four-door Charger and the two-door Challenger muscle cars that will drive into the sunset at the end of next yearreplaced by a brand new electric car. Chevrolet is expected to end production of the gas-powered Chevy Camaro in the coming years as part of the General Motors’ plans to exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035.

It means pioneers still yearn for the roar of the V-8 in an American sports coupe there would be only one option: the Mustang, which already dominates in sales over the Camaro and Challenger with the current sixth-generation car.

Sales of sports cars and muscle cars in Detroit have been declining for years. Mainstream two-door sports coupes like the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro fell 32 percent from 2015 to 2019 — the last year of sales before the automakers were plagued by chain problems. ongoing global supply, including shortage of semiconductor chips.

“Some of our competitors are talking about not being in the internal combustion sports car business, and what we are very proud of here today is that we have expanded that family.” Owens said.

Owens and other Ford officials declined to comment on whether the seventh-generation Mustang would be the last to feature a traditional internal combustion engine.

The 2024 Mustang, which will be built at a factory in Detroit, will go on sale in the US next summer. Ford hasn’t announced pricing for the car, but the current generation starts at $27,470.

The exterior of the Mustang 2024 looks quite familiar to fans of this car. It’s an evolutionary change from the sixth-generation version, but with slightly more muscular features.

“We are adding a modern touch to the heritage-inspired design,” said Chris Walter, Ford Mustang Design Director.

The front and rear of the car have been redesigned, but the overall shape and dimensions of the car are similar to the current-generation Mustang, last redesigned in 2015.

Both the four-cylinder and the V-8 are updated from the current Mustang. Ford hasn’t released performance specs, but they’re likely to be better than current vehicles. V-8 GT models will be offered with both manual and automatic transmission.

The current 2.3-liter turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine produces 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, while the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 produces power. 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Top speed ranges from 121 mph to 180 mph, depending on the model.

The most obvious changes to the seventh-generation Mustang are in the interior: the most prominent are the 13.2-inch central touchscreen and the accompanying 12.4-inch driver information cluster. The screens can be customized by the owner.

The other two new additions include an available “Electronic Sliding Brake” for easier driving and a “Remote Turnaround” feature that allows owners to remotely turn the car’s engine with the key.
