UPDATE (CBS46) – LaGrange residents are being asked to avoid the Sunny Point Circle neighborhood as officers remain at an impasse with a barricaded gunman.
The case began Tuesday when officers arrived at block 100 of Sunny Point Circle to arrest resident, Brian Jessee, on charges of making terroristic threats, felony obstruction and child cruelty. The charges came just a day after police carried out welfare checks on two 8-year-olds in the home because Jessee allegedly threatened suicide. Both children were safely removed from the residence.
Officers began evacuating residents Tuesday afternoon after learning Jessee had multiple guns and explosives inside the mansion.
During the evacuation from the vicinity, Jessee began firing bullets from the AR-15. He retreated into his home, where he remained barricaded.
Law enforcement establishes a perimeter around the area. Efforts were made to de-escalate the situation but resulted in more gunfire from Jessee.
“At this point, we have confirmed that our officers have exceeded 300 rounds,” the SGT said. Clayton Bryant of the LaGrange Police Department.
Officers attempted to use an armored vehicle to enter the mansion but were met with gunfire for more than an hour. Officers deployed CS gas and smoke in an effort to reduce the risk of danger to Jessee and the officers.
“He can disable an armored vehicle, a mission important in itself,” said Sgt. Bryant explained.
The Troup County Sheriff’s Office, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, the Newnan Police Department, the Peachtree City Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Explosives Division are providing assistance.
