common engine working on an affordable two-door electric ute.

Viewed by auto news at GM’s design studio in Warren, Michigan, the ute appears to be smaller than the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruzmonolithic two-cabin vehicle with length from 4.9 m to 5.1 m.

The mysterious Ute features a tub that is 4 to 4.5 feet (1219mm to 1371mm) long and a low roofline. For reference, a Maverick has a 1381mm tub, while a Santa Cruz measures 1323mm.

It’s said to be part of a range of affordable electric vehicles priced under US$30,000 (AU$43,316).

Chevrolet will introduce a mid-size car Spring equinox EV crossover on its Ultium architecture this year with a base price of around $30,000. It will join Bolt and Bolt EUVopened at US$26,500 and US$27,800 (AU$38,256 and AU$40,132) respectively.

GM has not released any pictures of the model or said when it will enter production.

It also doesn’t say what brand it will be sold under, though Chevrolet or GMC seem like the obvious choice.

Marketing images seen by auto news shows the ute being used for recreational activities such as surfing.

“We’re creating these to get a reaction and then trying to modify it or move on. What works? What’s not working? What is expected? Michael Pevovar, Chevrolet’s design director of affordable electric vehicles and crossovers.

“Affordability is a big part of this and there are so many different ways to approach it.

“The input might come back that it’s too small and that’s okay. Maybe [it won’t be] fits what this architecture can offer, but does it have pins for other architectures that it might need to be a bit larger?”

GM has introduced an electric pickup, the GMC Hummer EV. It will launch two more full-size models, Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra Electric Scooterwith deliveries starting this year and next year, respectively.

auto news reported last year GM will launch a Chevrolet Colorado EV and GMC Canyon EV in 2026, will go on sale alongside the recently redesigned petrol engine Colorado and canyon.

It’s not clear whether the media-revealed ute is front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive, although the mention of a “low roofline” suggests it’s more car-like in shape than the Colorado and Canyon.

In their latest generation, the Colorado/Canyon cousins are no longer available in two-door form, with buyers often attracted to dual cabs.

The body style is more popular in Latin America, with markets like Mexico offering single-cabin versions of the Chevrolet S10 Max – an improved version. LDV T60.

The last cars sold by GM in the US were the Chevrolet El Camino twins and the discontinued GMC Caballero in 1987, but the format also existed in Latin America.

The Chevrolet Montana/Tornado was based on the Opel Corsa/Holden Barina and later the Chevrolet Agile hatch, and had only two doors.

A new generation was revealed in December 2022, migrating to GM’s Global Emerging Markets (GEM) platform and adding two more doors in the process.
