Gold mine explosion is believed to have killed 59 people in Burkina Faso

OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO – A powerful explosion near a gold mining site in southwestern Burkina Faso left 59 people dead and more than 100 injured on Monday, national television and witnesses reported.

According to RTB, regional authorities issued a provisional charge following the explosion in the village of Gbombora. The explosion is believed to have been caused by chemicals used to process gold stored at the site.

“I saw bodies everywhere. It was horrible,” Sansan Kambou, a ranger at the site of the explosion, told The Associated Press by phone.

The first explosion happened around 2 p.m., with more explosions later as people ran for their lives, he said.
