Google headlines: ‘Temporary’ PEI potato ban: Agriculture Secretary

OTTAWA – Canada’s Agriculture Minister said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s suspension of exports of fresh PEI potatoes to the United States is only temporary.

The inspectorate said Monday the suspension was made to prevent the spread of potato warts.

“The United States has notified Canada that it will impose a Federal Order banning all imports of fresh potatoes from PEI for an indefinite period of time, unless Canada takes immediate voluntary action,” the statement said. Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Potato wart is a fungus that can reduce crop yields but, the agency says, poses no threat to human health.

Secretary Marie-Claude Bibeau told CTV’s Power Play on Monday that she spoke with US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack “three times this week.”

“I see that he’s talking about a temporary ban and he’s open to science-based discussions,” she told host Evan Solomon.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Charlottetown Laboratory says it has confirmed the presence of potato warts on two farms.
