Google invests in Anthropic, maker of rival ChatGPT

On Friday, Google announced partnership with Anthropic, a startup founded in 2021. Anthropic created Claude, which, like ChatGPT, is an artificial intelligence chatbot.

With the $300 million deal, Google will take a roughly 10% stake in the startup, based on the Financial Times. For its part, Anthropic gets both the financial boost and cloud computing resources it needs. The deal could give Anthropic a valuation of around $5 billion, New York Times report.

Of course, ChatGPT OpenAI maker has Microsoft money behind it – a lot of money. in an agreement revealed last month, Microsoft will invest 10 billion USD in this startup. It also invested $1 billion in 2019, then quietly added another $2 billion in 2021. The software giant plans to incorporate OpenAI technology into a wide range of products, including technology. Bing search engine, maybe disruptive Google’s search dominance.

The two starters share some DNA. Anthropic was founded primarily from a group that split from OpenAI after becoming increasingly disillusioned with strategic and cultural changes. A former OpenAI employee recently said Luck that while the founders of OpenAI Sam Altman and Greg Brockman just talk about AI safety, “that often looks like a fig leaf for business concerns, while real, legitimate concerns about AI safety have been brushed aside. .”

Anthropic says it focuses on AI safety—it calls itself an “AI safety and research company”—and point let it study on “Constitutional AI”

With the latter, it write on its website, “We show that language models can learn to follow a set of simple, natural language principles through self-improvement, and we use the new to train a more harmless assistant.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk warned about the dangers of advanced AI In December, he called ChatGPT “frighteningly good,” adding, “We’re not far from dangerously powerful AI.” “. I also tweeted that his confidence in the safety of OpenAI is “not high”, noting that, with help from him, it “started out as open source and non-profit. Both are wrong.

Luck contacted OpenAI for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Anthropic released Claude’s limited beta in January and plans to share it with a wider audience.

“We are partnering with Google Cloud to support the next phase of Anthropic where we will roll out our AI systems to more people,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. said in a statement. “This partnership gives us the performance and scale of the cloud infrastructure we need.”

He added, “We are eager to use Google Cloud infrastructure to build reliable, understandable, and controllable AI systems.”
