Google removes another driving mode screen – report

Google told 9to5Google console will be shut down on November 21, 2022, despite having only been announced in 2019.

The Assistant Driving Mode dashboard provided Android users who lacked a vehicle with Android Auto a simple interface that could display on their phone while they were driving.

This includes widgets like navigation search fields, media controls, shortcuts to send messages or make calls, a do not disturb button, and a button to activate the Google Assistant.

The apps button shows a list of apps you can use on the go, such as audio streaming and messaging services, while the For You widget provides recommendations for new or vehicles used frequently.

There will still be a driving-optimized Google Maps screen, showing maps but including a button for the Google Assistant, along with the same ‘app drawer’ functionality as the Driving Mode Dashboard Assistant’s car.

The company is said to be focusing on Driving Mode in Google Maps as most people are using it instead of the Assistant’s own Driving Mode Dashboard.

The latest move comes after the Android Auto app for mobile screens was discontinued earlier this year.

This is supposed to serve as just a backstop, separated from Android Auto in 2019, until the Assistant’s Driving Mode Dashboard is set to roll out.

With the latter not being widely available until 2021, Android Auto for Phone Screen is stuck for longer than planned. Both apps are now discontinued in the same year.
