Google research on AI image noise reduction is out of this world – TechCrunch

If you have great light, a good photographer can take beautiful pictures even with the worst camera imaginable. However, in low light, all bets are off. Sure, some cameras can Shoot a haunting video illuminated only by the light of the moon, but for stills – and especially stills taken on smartphones – digital noise continues to be a scourge. We may be getting close to what can be achieved with hardware; Heat and physics are working against us to create even better camera sensor. But then Google Research was born, released an open source project it calls MultiNerfand I have a feeling that we’re on the verge of things changing.

I could write a million words about how great this is, but I can do better; here’s a 1 minute 51 second video, at 30fps and ‘a picture speaking with a thousand words is magically worth at least 1.5 million words:

Algorithms run on raw image data and add the magic of AI to figure out what the footage ‘should’ look like without the distinct video noise produced by the image sensor.

For now, this is research rather than a commercial product, but as a photography and AI enthusiast, I’m super excited by these developments; The lines are blurring between photography and computer graphics, and I’m here for it. The photography feature has been present in all modern smartphones to some extent, and it is a question of time before algorithms like this are fully integrated.
