After winning the historic gold medal in the Lawn Bowls event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Rupa Rani Tirkey said they got goosebumps when they stepped on the podium and the national anthem was played. The Indian Field Rugby team made history by winning its first medal in the sport, winning the gold by beating South Africa 17-10 in the final.
“I feel so proud. We got goosebumps (when we stepped on the podium and the National Anthem was played). We never thought of it but it became a reality today.” Rupa Rani Tirkey told ANI.
Nayanmoni Saikia, another member of the team that won the historic gold, said that throughout the match, they did not lose hope and the communication between the teams helped them win points against South Africa.
“Our morale dropped a bit when they leveled at 1-1. But we didn’t lose hope. We talked to each other and understood we could do it. We will defend. point by point and protect it,” Nayanmoni Saikia said.
Speaking of the event, the back-and-forth action between India and their opponents, who are among the best in the sport with 44 medals. India was represented by Rupa Rani Tirkey, Nayanmoni Saikia, Lovely Choubey and Pinki Singh in this historic match. India won the match with a score of 17-10.
India started the match with a lead before South Africa came back to equalize 2-2. India continued to dominate their opponents when after finishing 7, the score was read as 7-2 in their favor.
After round 8, South Africa got two points on the board, but India got one more point, widening the lead to 8-4.
South Africa kept fighting back and let the score read 8-6 after finishing 9, although India still had a two-point lead.
After the End of 10, the score stands at 8-8. India sought the lead after finishing round 11 as South Africa led them by two points with a score of 8-10.
Things started to turn in India’s favor once again after Finish 13, when they added two more points to once again lead 12-10. They continued to build innovation momentum and extended the score to 15-10. India never looked back from that and ended the game with Gold in hand, while South Africa had to settle for silver.
Earlier in the day, the Indian Three Lions team including Tania Choudhary, Pinki and Rupa Rani Trikey defeated New Zealand in the first round match with a score of 15-11 after 18 matches.
But in the women’s doubles category, Team India including Lovely Choubey, Nayanoni Saikia was defeated by New Zealand with a score of 9-18.
Earlier, on Sunday, India’s Lawn Bowls men’s pair of Dinesh Kumar and Sunil Bahadur advanced to the quarterfinals of their event following a win over England in a match in Section C.
On the other hand, Tania Choudhary broke her losing streak in the Lawn Bowls by beating Northern Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill 21-12 after 19 finishes. Despite winning the match, she was unable to reach the quarterfinals as she had recorded three consecutive losses against Dee Hoggan (Scotland), Arthur Almond (Falkland Islands) and Laura Daniels (Wales) before.
