Grandstand collapsed during basketball game in Cairo

CAIRO –

At least 27 people were injured when the stands partially collapsed Saturday during a basketball game in the Egyptian capital Cairo, health authorities said.

Officials said some seats fell to spectators during the Super Cup between Cairo’s Al-Ahly and Alexandria’s Ittihad following the stampede in the stands.

According to local media, the match at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Arena in Cairo’s October 6 district was canceled following the incident.

Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar said in a statement that most of the injured had broken bones. He said they were taken to hospital and their injuries were not life-threatening.

Mohamed Fawzi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports, told a local TV channel that the stand had collapsed as Ittihad supporters trampled each other.

Footage on social media showed a metal stand in the multi-purpose arena, named after Hassan Moustafa, the head of the International Handball Federation, collapsed. It opened three years ago before the 2021 Men’s Handball World Championships hosted by Egypt.

Sports incidents are not uncommon in Egypt.

A 2012 riot in the coastal city of Port Said left more than 70 people dead in one of the world’s worst football-related incidents.

In 2015, 22 fans were killed in a stampede by police firing tear gas outside a stadium on the outskirts of Cairo.
