“Good Guy With Gun” A rare case, and a typical cop is frustrating
The outcome of Sunday’s mass shooting, in which “a good guy with a gun” kills or incapacitates an active shooter, is actually a rare occurrence, according to the data. published by The New York Times.
Of the 433 gun attacks that occurred in the US between 2000 and 2021, an armed bystander shot and killed the gunman in 22, and of those 22 incidents, 10 were police officers or employees. security guard on duty, the Times reported.
The organization has defined active shooter attacks as incidents in which one or more shooters kill or attempt to kill multiple people in a densely populated place.
Law enforcement often tries to prevent armed bystanders from engaging the shooter, which can sometimes create more confusion in an already busy situation.
In a 2021 incident in Arvada, Colorado, police shot and killed a “good guy with a gun” after mistaking him for the gunman, according to CNN.
More problems, however, were raised after the deadly mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas earlier in May, where law enforcement did not intervene with the shooter for more than an hour. The shooting left 19 primary school students and two teachers dead and 17 others injured.
