Halle Berry in The Biggest Challenge of Directing Bruised – The Hollywood Reporter

At the Fourth Black Film and Television Celebration on December 6, the Critics’ Choice Association will present the Career Achievement Award to Halle Berry, 55, who, 20 years after becoming a became the first (and still only) black woman to earn an Academy Award for best actress for her performance in Monster’s Ball, has just entered a new chapter in his career. In Bruises, Netflix’s new TV series about a mixed martial arts fighter is trying to make a comeback, she not only stars but also makes her directorial debut.

What motivated you to direct at this point in your career?

You never really know when you’re ready to do anything. I liken it to having kids: You don’t know when you’re ready to be a parent, you just decide that’s what you want to do, you’re forced, you meet the right person, you reach a certain age and you say, “This is important to me. This feels like the next evolutionary step in my life.” And I think that’s how I feel about my career. I didn’t set out to do it, but I felt compelled to do it.

What is the biggest challenge in directing? Bruises?

It’s messy. It was the hardest thing I’ve done in my professional career, because this character is a big, huge character that requires a lot of my time and attention and preparation, and then directing. Performing for the first time also requires a lot of my time, attention and preparation. So I lit the candle at both ends, which made for super long, really stressful days. But at the end of the day, I’m absorbed in doing something I love and something I feel passionate about. And it’s a story that I feel like if I don’t tell, I’m going to die.

To be Bruises, a sports drama, what kind of movie do you envision yourself making?

I like a good movie. I love diving into characters, and dealing with human filth and fracturing. Those are the characters that I like to play the most. I’m a fan of MMA, so when the script fell on my lap, it was a world that I loved and that I already knew and I felt that if I had the chance to re-imagine the story in a different way. new way, there’s another reason to tell a story in this age-old genre that people love so much.

How do you feel Black film and television has changed since the beginning of your career?

Great strides have been made since I started 30 years ago – I look around and see no Negro’s face. I don’t see my story and myself reflected a lot on television or movies. So as I sit here today, 30 years since I started, I see a huge difference. I see Black women, Black faces, Negro people around me. I see our stories being told. And that tells me progress is happening. Is there work to do? Yes, but there’s always work to do.

Why do you think in the 20 years since you won the Oscar for best actress, no other actress of color has received such an honor?

Well, you never want to be the only one; when you win something like that, you hope that you can open the door and put the others behind you. So the fact that there is no one to follow is heartbreaking. But it doesn’t reduce the moment for me, and it doesn’t reduce the achievement. And when I look around at my peers like Viola [Davis] and Taraji [P. Henson] and all the other women who recently stood on the brink of winning that award but fell short, they’re pointing our needle forward – with or without the award. They are fundamentally changing the face of women of color in this business.

The edited interview is long and clear.
