Eyewitness video shows the moment Alexander was shot multiple times.
Police Chief Ed Gonzalez said the incident Wednesday night began inside during a basketball game where Alexander was accompanied by four men.
“Some kind of verbal commotion during the game that broke out could have spilled over into the parking lot,” Gonzalez said.
When everyone was asked to leave the gym, it gave both parties time to cool down. Instead, initial information suggests they decided to settle with guns.
“Right now, that seems to be what happened. Both sides were armed. We don’t know who fired first or who took the weapons first,” Gonzalez continued.
The shooting caused confusion for those who were regular guests of the gym. At the scene, cars pulling up to the parking lot tried to get in, but couldn’t because the gym was closed.
“I didn’t receive any kind of correspondence or any kind of correspondence or anything like that,” said Rasadd Cousins, a regular gym goer.
“The reality is the kids are here. They have a daycare facility and I have a son and it happened. It was crazy,” Miracle Wiley said.
Alexander was flown to the Herman Memorial by Life Flight and remains in a critical condition. Sheriff Gonzalez, like all of us, wondered why something as simple as a game could lead to something so serious.
“We have so much violence going on. It didn’t have to be. There were other people around,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “Sheriff’s deputies were nearby on another call and heard gunshots, so (they) could get here in less than two minutes. We were told after the shooting, that The four men involved took off in a four-door sedan. The suspect who pulled the trigger was asked to come out first and share his side of the story.”
If you know anything about him or about what happened, call the Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
