Harris County sergeant was assaulted and sexually assaulted by inmate, sheriff’s office said

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at 2 p.m. at the Harris County Jail on 1200 Baker Street. The sergeant said he was assaulted by a 27-year-old inmate, according to the sheriff’s office.

She went to the prison clinic and was then taken to the hospital for further medical care and support.

“We sent a representative of our staff to the hospital and he said it was the worst fight he had ever seen in his 46 career,” said David Cuevas, president of the Harris County Delegate Organization. his year. “It has shaken our agency to its core.”

Cuevas is asking the public to pray for the officer’s recovery.

ABC13 sources identified the suspect as Jeremiah Williams, 27, who was in the Harris County jail on charges of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault from two attacks on September 8, 2020 The attacks occurred minutes apart in a park west of Harris County.

During one attack, deputies said Williams punched a 45-year-old jogger in the face and body before sexually assaulting her. Minutes later, Williams is said to have run up behind a 27-year-old runner and pinned her to the ground. She was able to escape.

“The brutal attack by our Sheriff’s Office teammates warrants a thorough and speedy investigation,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “Disclosure of all the facts regarding this alleged attack is a top priority as we seek answers and justice. All of our brave employees deserve their gratitude. feel safe and we will do everything to protect them. The immediate focus of our team is to provide adequate support to our team members.”

Sources told ABC13 Williams had returned to his cell without an escort when he attacked the victim in her office on the fifth floor. A crime scene unit and detectives’ car were parked outside the prison for hours afterward.

The sergeant’s violent assault came a month after 19-year-old Fred Harris, a special needs teen, was beaten and stabbed in prison. He later died at the hospital. His cellmate, Michael Ownby, a man twice the size of Harris, was charged with murder.

In September, the delegates’ organization sued the county alleging unsafe prison conditions and staff shortages.

“There weren’t enough people in that prison. I kept saying it. I kept warning them. I kept talking to them and they didn’t listen,” said David Batton, an attorney for the delegate organization.
In addition to the criminal investigation, an internal review will be conducted, the sheriff’s office said.
