HBO’s The Last of Us casts Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey as new role

Craig Mazin and HBO’s Our Last looks like it will mostly stick to the story set out in the developer’s Naughty Dog’s Our Lasttakes Joel and Ellie through an America ravaged by mushrooms. But judging from the trailerThere is at least one major exception: Melanie Lynskey.

Monday Our Last The teaser trailer is also considered a casting announcement for Yellow jacket Melanie Lynskey stars in the HBO series. She’s playing a character named Kathleen, a “ruthless leader of the revolutionary movement in Kansas City,” an HBO rep told Polygon. Joel and Ellie travel across parts of the country in the game – from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, before heading to Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Their journey through the Central of the country is largely ignored in the game, but it looks like the HBO show will fill some of those gaps. Between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Jackson, Wyoming, it looks like Ellie and Joel will also be visiting Kansas City, Missouri.

If you’ve been following Our Last‘communication, this may not be news to you. HBO confirmed with IGN In early August, Henry (played by Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard) – the game’s two notable characters – will encounter Ellie and Joel in Kansas City instead of Pittsburgh, the original location. At the time, HBO said Sam and Henry were “evading a revolutionary movement seeking vengeance,” and it appeared that Lynskey’s Kathleen was the leader of that group.

Usually when I’m thinking Our last one, the word “revolution” is associated with Fireflies, the group that fights against oppressive government control and the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) in quarantined areas of the country. But Kathleen’s group seems more like a Hunter, basically all the unnamed bad guys in the game – and the ones chasing Ellie, Joel, Sam, and Henry around in that infamous armored truck.

My theory is that the HBO show will build this group up a bit more, making them feel more organized under Kathleen’s lead. Of course, that’s all speculation; I’m not sure we’ll get the answer there until a few episodes later Our Last‘Season of 10 episodes, airing in 2023, HBO said.
