GOLD RIVER, California – Sacramento State’s varsity eight, varsity second and varsity four all earned medals on the final day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Sunday at Lake Natoma.
Wasps won gold in eighth, silver in eighth and bronze in fourth. The WIRA gold award is the first for the Hornets’ flagship boat since 2010. Additionally, the second 8 has won silver for the third year in a row (no WIRA awards in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic). ) and won a medal at the 15th WIRA in the past 19 years the event has been held. That number includes five silver medals in the past six years.
Varsity eight, varsity eight and varsity four are the only entries in which Sacramento State competes, and each boat finished in the top three of yesterday’s heat to qualify for today’s grand finals.
Under the most ideal conditions, Sacramento State’s varsity 8 hit a quick time of 6:41.45 over 2,000 meters to win its six-boat final, which ended just ahead of San Diego (6:43,38). UC San Diego came in third with 6:50.54.
In the second 8 varsity totals final, San Diego won with a time of 7:02.31, followed by Sacramento State (7:09.76) and UC San Diego (7:11.83) to move past the top three in the yard. play five boats.
In round 4, Sacramento State’s time in third place was 8:37.88, behind both San Diego and UC San Diego.
The wasps returned to the water Saturday as they headed to Sacramento Harbor to confront UC Davis. That will mark the last regular regatta of the season when the Hornets will compete May 15 at the American Athletics Conference Championships in Tennessee.
