Heavy rain and strong winds make landfall in Atlantic Canada

HALIFAX, NS –

Strong winds and heavy rain continued to hit parts of Atlantic Canada this morning as a large, sluggish storm halted activity in the area.

At one point this morning, the storm knocked out power to more than 12,000 Nova Scotia Power customers, mostly in the central and eastern regions of the province.

At Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport, the strongest gusts recorded at 98 km/h at 1 a.m. and gusts of more than 90 km/h were reported around the city. port.

Meanwhile, peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h were reported along the east coast of the province and in Eskasoni, in central Cape Breton.

Total rainfall has exceeded 50 mm in many communities, but these numbers are expected to rise as the storm is forecast to linger over the region through Wednesday.

A series of rainfall and wind warnings remain in effect for southeastern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, most of Nova Scotia, western Newfoundland, Iles-de-la-Madeleine and the north coast of Quebec.

Environment Canada said more than 150 mm of rain could fall east of Nova Scotia, with more than 200 mm possible in Cape Breton and southwestern Newfoundland late Wednesday.

Soil across much of the Maritimes has remained saturated by rainfall in recent weeks. As a result, there is a potential for flash flooding, standing water on roads and possibly washing away near rivers and sewers, Environment Canada said.

This Canadian Press report was first published on November 23, 2021.
