Ghislaine Maxwell, who is facing six federal charges including sex trafficking of a minor and conspiracy, could face up to 70 years in prison if convicted on all counts. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The prosecution called a total of 24 witnesses in 10 days of testimony and the defense called 9 witnesses in two days.

Prosecutors said in opening statement Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein created a sexual abuse system in which they lured underage girls into sex with Epstein using massages and cash payments.

Defending her, argued that she was being seen as a scapegoat for Epstein’s actions and attacked the memories and motives of the women who said they had been abused.

Maxwell refused to testify during the trial, told Judge Alison Nathan when asked if she understood her rights, “In your honor, the government has failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. And so I don’t need to testify.”

Epstein, who pleaded guilty in 2008 to raise an allegation of prostitution, is indicted on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 but died by suicide in prison one month later. Maxwell was arrested a year later.

Note: Two charges of perjury against Maxwell related to the 2016 demise in a civil case have been cut from this trial and will be resolved in a separate trial thereafter.
