‘He’s grown up as a human and a footballer’ – Emmanuel Petit salutes the Arsenal star, who is ‘unlikely Arteta wants him’ for making a big impression

Before Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has lyrically merged about his French compatriot William Saliba after being impressed with his performance for the Gunners this season.

Arsenal continued their fine start to the season with a 3-1 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur in north London at the weekend. They are currently at the top of the Premier League table with 21 points after 8 matches.

Saliba’s performance in defence has been an integral part of the Gunners’ form so far in this campaign. He has helped the team keep three clean sheets in the league, while also contributing to many goals.

The centre-back joined the north London giants in 2019, but has spent the last three seasons on loan in France. He prepared to leave the club permanently if he is not guaranteed regular playtime when he returns in the summer.

However, Mikel Arteta has since shown his confidence in Saliba by letting him start regularly for his team. The Spaniard is reaping the fruits of his decision as the 21-year-old continues to impress for Arsenal.

Assessing Saliba’s performances this season, Petit pointed out how the defender has concerns about his time with Arsenal. The former Gunners midfielder went on to insist that the youngster has stabilized Arteta’s backline. He told Premier League Productions [via HITC]:

“He made a big impression in France while playing at Marseille. He also got a cap for the French national team because he was outstanding all season.”

“I think he’s back at the club, he’s not sure Arteta wants him to play with him and he wants some assurance. He has shown maturity over the past two seasons and leadership ability. in the middle of the defence. He played well, that’s the most important thing.”

“He’s matured as a human and a footballer. I think he’s taken on more responsibility and he’s also shown more confidence – Saliba has stabilized the defence, and they’re getting more and more confident. than.”
