Honda and GM jointly develop electric vehicles globally, first cars will be available in 2027

Things are getting serious between GM and Honda’s motobike. You can even tell that sparks are flying between the two.

Overnight, the American and Japanese automakers announced that they would “co-develop a series of affordable electric vehicles based on new global architecture uses next-generation Ultium battery technology”.

The partnership aims to “enable the production of millions of EVs globally starting in 2027,” including small crossovers for both automakers.

According to GM and Honda, compact crossovers are the most popular vehicle in the world and account for about 13 million vehicles sold annually.

“Our plans include a new all-electric product for North America that is positioned at a lower price point than that of a new all-electric product for North America,” said Doug Parks, GM’s head of global product development. Chevrolet Equinox EV“.

Equinox EV is provocative at the beginning of the year, and will go on sale in the United States from 2024 with prices starting at $30,000 ($40,000).

GM vehicles on the new EV platform will target the automaker’s core markets in North America, Latin America and China.

Honda hasn’t provided any details on its product plans for the new architecture, although it’s safe to assume its vehicles will be designed with North America, Japan, China, and North America in mind. Europe.

Neither company has said whether GM will use Honda plants or vice versa for vehicles based on the new platform.

In addition to this, the two companies will also investigate further collaboration on battery technologyto both improve performance and reduce costs.

Currently Honda is working on solid-state battery prototypes, while GM is developing solid-state lithium-metal and silicon battery chemistry plants.

Today’s announcement is just the latest step in the ever-expanding relationship between the two automakers.

GM and Honda began working together in 2013 on hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen storage. Since then, the two companies have conducted joint research into battery technology, and Honda has a minority stake in Cruise, GM’s autonomous vehicle division.

In 2020, the two companies confirm Honda will use GM’s electric vehicle architecture and Ultium battery technology for two crossovers destined for the US market. One is called Honda’s Prologue will launch in 2024, and it will be followed by an Acura model.

Both the Prologue and the unnamed Acura crossover will be styled by Honda, but manufactured at a GM plant.

It’s unclear whether today’s partnership means Honda is giving up on developing its own e:Architecture in-house or that EV platform will be used for larger vehicles.

E: Architecture was announced last year as part of the company’s plan to sell only electric and fuel cell vehicles by 2040 and become completely carbon neutral by 2050. Meanwhile, Honda said that e:Architecture-based vehicles will enter production in the “second half of the 2020s.”

Honda’s current EV range is limited to the retro e hatch, which runs on its sole platform, and electric variants based on the HR-V. It is also preparing to launch an electric kei car for the domestic market.

GM, meanwhile, has two hatchback models, the Bolt and the Bolt EUV, while the GMC Hummer EV pickup has just entered production and will soon be joined by the GMC Hummer SUV.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV announced in January, uses the same EV-only body-on-frame architecture, and will be on the market from 2023.

In addition to the fact that GM has just begun production of the Cadillac Lyriq, the first vehicle based on the BEV3 touring car architecture that will one day underpin the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV, and the Cadillac Celestiq among others.

THAN: Which brands will go all-electric and when?
