In a new behind-the-scenes video for Game of Thrones spin-off House of the DragonHosts Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik discuss making a new series against the legacy of the original show – as well as doing justice to the world created in George RR Martin’s books.
The video features both the hosts, as well as Martin himself, talking about considerations when creating a Game of Thrones prequel.
“I feel incredibly loyal and responsible to the original show,” said Sapochnik, host and veteran of the original series, for which he directed several episodes. “I’d love to be in the same room as that show, because it’s a game changer.”
“You get that great call-out that’s what every writer has come to expect, telling you: ‘we’re going to make this,'” said Condal, who is new to the House of the Dragon franchise. ‘ ‘Condal, newcomer to the House of the Dragon franchise. “And you’re happy for a few seconds, and then you realize the responsibility is on your shoulders.”
Martin has throw his assist after the spin-offand he repeats that in the video, calling Condal “someone who really knows my work” and saying that Sapochnik directed some of the best episodes of the original series.
Of course, with the ending of the original series largely disappointing for fans after eight years of dominating the pop-culture scene, Game of Thrones’ legacy isn’t entirely positive. Although not mentioned directly in the video, Sapochnik says that “the idea of going back to Westeros is almost too much of a challenge.”
Sapochnik explains, “you have to start by respecting it, you can’t start by doing it differently for another purpose”. Condal also added that House of the Dragon will not be “a prequel for prequel’s sake.”
The behind-the-scenes video offers a variety of new looks at Targaryen-dominated Westeros of the House of the Dragon ahead of the show’s HBO Max premiere on August 21. The video also reiterates the grand scale of the showgives us a glimpse into the process of filming at least one major fight.
