The median home price in Canada hit a record high of $748,450 in January, according to new data released by the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) on Tuesday. This is up 21% from the same time last year, with the figures not adjusted for seasons.
Compared to the previous month, Canada saw a 1% increase in nationwide home sales compared to December. However, the number of new properties listed fell 11% from December to January.
Across the country, there seems to be an even split between the number of local markets where sales are up and the number of markets that are down. Cities such as Calgary, Ottawa and the Greater Vancouver area saw increases in the number of residential real estate transactions, while activity in Winnipeg and Montreal decreased.
The national median home price is heavily influenced by sales in specific regions of the country, including the Greater Vancouver and Greater Toronto Area, which are considered two of the most vibrant and expensive housing markets. the reddest in Canada.
